In chapter 4 in the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Jean finally meets up with with her friend Dill when the school year ends. The conflict happens when Jean was on her swing and she couldn't stop and get off because she was going too fast. She says "I lay on the cement for a while and hear Jem’s voice: “Scout, get away from there, come on!” I opened my eyes and realized I was at the front of the Radley’s steps" (p.8) The Radley's House is supposedly haunted and she got very frightened that she did not want to do her play on that house anymore. Atticus had said to not continue with the play because it was disrespectful. Jean also agreed to not go on with the play because she said that "The second reason had to do with what happened earlier that day. After I rolled into the Radley’s yard, I heard not only Jem’s voice yelling but also another sound. It was a soft sound. Someone inside of the house was laughing" (p.9). She was very spooked out from this because know one lives in the Radley's house. She thought she was getting haunted because she stole the gum and 2 pennies from their tree.

In chapter 3 of the book How to Kill a Mockingbird, the author shows the different point of views of the characters. For example, Jean explains that her teacher Miss Caroline "I told him all
that had happened in the day and even the part about Miss Caroline saying that he had taught me all wrong so we couldn’t read together anymore" (p.7). Jean says this because of what happened the chapter before. Her teacher didn't want Jean's dad to teach her how to read. When Atticus, Jean's Father, asked to read with her that night, she said she wanted to quit school and that he cannot read with her anymore. Atticus responded differently to what Miss Caroline said. He said, "You can’t punish the children for the father’s faults. Atticus and I made a compromise. If I agreed to go to school, then we could continue reading together each night, but we better keep it a secret." (p.7). Her father says this because he does not think it was right for Miss Caroline to not let him read with his daughter. |
