In chapter two, Jean talks about her first day of school. My describes her teacher named, Miss Caroline as "She was twenty-one years old and very pretty. She had bright auburn hair, pink cheeks, and wore crimson fingernail polish. Miss Caroline was from Winston County, which is in northern Alabama." That day at school, Miss Caroline had found out that Jean had already knew how to read and write. Jean stated that in paragraph three that "She wanted to teach me to read herself...I think it disappointed her that I already knew how." Before lunch had started, Miss Caroline noticed that Walter Cunningham had no lunch. She asked if he wanted some money for food, but he declined. Jean had told Miss Caroline that he’s a Cunningham. Jean meant that "the Cunninghams were very poor farmers, but they never took charity." Miss Caroline thought that she was being rude and making jokes. She told her to take out her hand and when she did this, her teacher had whipped her twelve times with a ruler. Miss Caroline had told her to sit in the corner and wait for the lunch bell to ring. I think that it was unnecessary for her teacher to do that because she wasn't doing anything wrong.

In the book "To Kill a Mockingbird," by Harper Lee, the narrator of the story Jean Louise “Scout” Finch has a brother named Jem. Their father's name is Atticus Finch and their aunt's name is Alexandra. The setting of this book takes place in Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930's. In the beginning of the book on page two, it stated that "the city of Maycomb was a tired, old town back in the days. People moved slowly, ambling across the town square.." It also says that the people in the town never had anything to do. The narrator "Jean" also explains how her and her brother meet a boy named Charles Baker Harris. He is the nephew of their neighbor named Miss Rachel and his parents call him Dill. Together, Jean, Jem, and Charles, would each other stories, leading them to start talking about the Radley House. The book also states on page three that" There was a rumor that it was haunted. People said “Boo” Radley went out at night and peeped in people’s windows. That he breathed on flowers and they froze instantly. They said he committed little crimes in the night but not one ever saw him." At the end of chapter one, Jem was dared to go touch the spooky house and when he ran back to his house, they thought they saw something moving in there.
